Two Women Caught On Video Stealing Man's Van From Driveway

NORTH HIGHLANDS (CBS13) - A man's work van was stolen from his driveway, but he didn't realize it until the next day.

"And I went out and was like, 'Dude where's my car?' Right? So that's how it was, where's my car?" said Mike Monk.

The crime was caught on surveillance cameras and the culprits appear to be women. It happened on Larry Way near Don Julio Boulevard and Watt Avenue in North Highlands.

Susan Colley-Monk, Monk's wife, will tell you with a knowing smile her husband mike is notorious for losing his keys.

"So I have a key rack, so I'm constantly looking and he needs to hang it up," she said.

This time, he admits, he's not to blame.

"They had an opportunity, they took it and it's a shame," said Monk.

The surveillance video Colley-Monk posted on Facebook tells the story.

"Everybody's been sharing the videos," said Colley-Monk.

One woman walks up, checking out Monk's work van parked outside his home. She hops out the passenger side.

"Brazen, right there in broad daylight," said Colley-Monk.

A few minutes later, an SUV pulls up to the curb and a second woman gets out. She gets into the van and starts it up. Moments later, she pulls off.

"Two women; looked like a Thelma and Louise situation that ganged up and took the van," said Colley-Monk.

It doesn't look like they even had to break in. Monk thinks he probably dropped his keys outside or left them in the truck. And even worse, his house key was on the chain.

The couple spent hours changing out every lock in the house and they're also thinking about installing a security system as well.

Nick: "Are you more upset with the people who stole the van or yourself?"

Monk: "Myself. I think I'm more upset with myself because I gave that opportunity."

Monk's a teacher these days. He used to be a contractor and that van got him everywhere…for years.

"That's how we make our living in the trades. It's our vehicle; you don't take another man's tools. You definitely don't take his car, because that's how he feeds his family," said Monk. "But you have to protect yourself and make sure you know where your keys are at all times, because I didn't."

The couple filed a police report with the CHP and hope someone recognizes the thieves.
