Family Of Stockton Mom Killed In Hostage Shootout Wants Records On Police Shootings

STOCKTON (CBS13) — The family of a mother killed in a Stockton bank hostage shooting wants more answers from Stockton Police, saying the information could show a lack of proper police training.

A chain link fence surrounds the now-infamous one-time Bank of The West building in Stockton where Misty Holt-Singh was taken hostage before a wild police chase and shootout that led to her death.

Now, family attorney Greg Bentley is requesting volumes of paperwork from the city, including data from the past 10 years showing all studies, analysis, emails and memos identifying the number of times police officers used deadly force.

"Were looking for more information from our own perspective into what happened that day—why 34 officers shot 600 bullets into a vehicle, where all 10 bullets that struck Misty were fired by police officers," he said.

Stockton's city attorney issued a statement in response to CBS13's interview request saying they can't comment on ongoing litigation.

Bentley says the records request was spurred by a report in the Stockton Record showing the Stockton Police Department has averaged more than two fatal officer-involved shootings a year since 2009.

"It goes towards perhaps lack of training, supervision, things of that nature at the department," he said.

In previous interviews, Stockton Police Chief Eric Jones called the bank hostage shootout an unprecedented rolling active-shooter scenario with conflicting public safety responsibilities.

"Are they going to take additional hostages, are they going to get to a school and take over a school," he said.

Holt-Singh's family has filed a claim against the city paving the way for a lawsuit.

The city now has 10 days to respond to the family's public records act request.
