Family Says Vacaville's Green Tree Golf Club Had to Close As Fewer People Play Sport

VACAVILLE (CBS13) — A popular golf course in Vacaville has closed for good after 55 years in business after the owners said they couldn't afford to keep it open.

Golfers were confused, shocked and disappointed by the sudden closure of the Green Tree Golf Club. It's been a staple in the town for nearly 60 years, but owners say they just weren't getting the business they needed.

The closed signs went up Wednesday morning, and as golfers one by one drove up, they left confused.

It wasn't an easy decision for the Sayer family, but they say they found no other viable options. They'll be looking to take care of their regular players and high school clubs to help them find another course in the area.

The family says the course went from 110,000 rounds of golf a year to about 30,000. They say there's less interest in the sport as a whole for the sport in the United States and California.

But there's no lack of interest for Katie Van Wagoner, her husband and their autistic son.

"It's going to be hard to find something else, or find something close by, because we would drive by and he'd say 'There's the big golf ball.' He was very excited about golfing here," she said.

It's too soon to say what will happen with the property.

Those who are owed money, gift cards, tournament wins and player cards are being offered refunds. Items in their pro shop will be half off starting on Friday.
