Orlando Police Response Saved Many Lives, Law Enforcement Expert Says

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Former Sacramento County Sheriff John McGinness is weighing in on law enforcement's response to Sunday morning's tragic shooting at an Orlando nightclub.

McGinness says Orlando police breached one of the walls inside the nightclub and used deadly force on the suspected gunman to stop him from killing more innocent people.

"In his case he doesn't care, he's gonna die at the conclusion of this anyway, this is his swan song," McGinness said.

The former sheriff compared the Orlando shooting to the San Bernardino massacre in 2015, saying the victims in both shootings were gathered to celebrate an event and had no expectation of violence.

Law enforcement agencies around the country frequently train for critical events like Sunday's mass shooting. McGinness says they had an exceptional response which helped prevent more innocent lives from being taken.

"They confronted him bravely and charged in there and who knows how many lives they saved," McGinness said.

Local nightclubs are also now considering changes to security protocol after the Orlando shooting.

The owner of midtown Sacramento's "Faces" nightclub says he's not opposed to the idea of installing metal detectors.

A few years ago he approved patdown for people going in, and even installed sensors that guest insert driver's licenses into.

The Sacramento Police Department's entertainment team works with bars and nightclubs during weekends and special events. They have announced they plan to add more officers on the street.
