Giants Sign Jimmy Rollins To Minor League Contract
Jimmy Rollins, who was born and raised in Alameda County, is moving across the Bay to San Francisco, as he and the Giants have agreed to a minor league contract.
Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports broke the news Monday morning on twitter.
The 38-year-old shortstop is most known for his time spent in Philadelphia Phillies organization (15 seasons), but has recently played for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chicago White Sox.
Last season with the Sox, Rollins hit just .221/.295/.329 in 166 plate appearances before losing the starting job to rookie Tim Anderson. Rollins had two home runs, five stolen bases and eight doubles in 41 games.
As an NL MVP winner in 2007, the three-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner has also won a World Series back in 2008 when the Phillies beat the Tampa Bay Rays.
Oh, he also won a Silver Slugger back in 2007.
The question is, where does he fit in on the Giants loaded roster?
With a Gold Glove middle infield with Brandon Crawford and Joe Panik, Rollins - who has never played in any position other than shortstop - will most likely come off the bench to relieve Crawford. Eduardo Nunez can also back up the shortstop position as well if need be.
Rollins, despite his age, is a perfect fit for AT&T Park. As a player with 115 career triples, the chance to hit to right-center field is a dream for Giants players. His speed (470 career steals) will also help the Giants after recording just the 14th most stolen bases in 2016.
