TULSA, Okla. (AP) – A paper cup allegedly used by Elvis Presley six decades ago in Oklahoma is up for auction, and bids have already surpassed $1,500.

North Carolina resident Wade Jones is a collector of all things Elvis. He tells the Tulsa World that the crumpled blue-and-white Dixie cup was snagged by a fan in April 1956, after Elvis performed at the Tulsa Fairgrounds Pavilion.

Jones says a fan named June allegedly retrieved the cup the day after the performance, right before Elvis left town for a show in Oklahoma City. A letter accompanying the collector’s item says June had asked to keep the cup “as a little memento.”

Bids for the now-yellowed paper cup had surpassed $1,576 on eBay by Wednesday night. Jones says the auction closes Sunday evening.

  1. Whatever the cup attracts, it will most likely set a world’s record for a 20th Century figure. He already owns many, from the lock of his hair going for US$115,000, in 2002, which is an all time record for anyone, no matter when he or she was born, to what was paid for his image multiplied eight times in an Andy Warhol silverscreen (measuring 6.5 ft × 12 ft ), which sold privately in late 2008 for US$100 million. No other work of art highlighting an actual, well known person who was born in either this, or the 20th century has fetched, privately or at auction, as much as Warhol’s “Eight Elvises” did.
