Suspect Dead, Juvenile Hostage Safe After Incident At Modesto Home

8 p.m. Update:  The Sheriff's Department said a male suspect is dead and a juvenile hostage is safe after an hours-long incident in a Modesto home.

Officials said they responded to a call of an unknown armed male suspect who entered the home in the 200 block of Olivero Road with a firearm around 1:42 p.m. Thursday. The Sheriff's department does not know why the suspect entered the home, whether it was random or if he was known to the residents.

When deputies arrived, they determined the suspect had taken a juvenile, who lived at the house, as a hostage after other residents inside were able to escape.

The SWAT team and hostage negotiators arrived on the scene to assist deputies. The Hostage Negotiation Team attempted to make contact with the suspect for several hours but did not get a response.

At one point the juvenile hostage attempted to escape and was rescued by the SWAT team. During the rescue, the sheriff's department said the suspect was killed.

The juvenile did not suffer any major injuries during the incident.

Detectives and District Attorney investigators are investigating the incident.

MODESTO (CBS13) — Stanislaus County Sheriff's deputies are working a "critical incident" in Modesto.

The Sheriff's Department said the incident occurred at a house in the 200 block of Olivero Road.

The SWAT team was on the scene to assist deputies and concluded their operation around 5:30 p.m.

The roadway remains closed between Crows Landing Road and Jim Way.
