Deadly Motorcycle Crash Shut Down I-5 Near Elk Grove

ELK GROVE (CBS13) — A motorcyclist died Saturday afternoon in Elk Grove after crashing into a pickup truck and being struck by a big rig.

California Highway Patrol South Sacramento units said the victim, a 63-year-old man from Lodi, was riding his motorcycle just before 2:30 p.m. in the northbound lanes of Interstate 5 just north of Elk Grove Boulevard.

CHP said the man was riding behind a Dodge pickup truck and failed to stop as the truck was braking for traffic ahead. The motorcyclist collided into the back of the truck and was tossed from the bike into the next lane, where he was struck by the rear tires of an oncoming big rig.

Authorities said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP said the driver of the Dodge pulled over and remained on the scene to provide a statement to officers, but the big rig failed to stop.

At this time, officers said it is unclear if drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released.
