Since its inception in 1987, Mikuni has delivered authentic Japanese cuisine in an upscale yet comfortable setting. Well known to locals here in Sacramento, Mikuni has proven itself to be the place to enjoy sushi. Would Mikuni Kaizen entice and satisfy as well as it's previous restaurant endeavors?

The location of Kaizen is an excellent one. It is surrounded by many other chic, upscale restaurants and retail stores in the ultra-modern and fanciful Fountains in Roseville. As those in the know say, "location is everything." I could already picture my girlfriend and I buying a couch at a well known furniture store which caters to the hip and trendy crowd down about a hundred yards from Kaizen, then going into the newest Mikuni venture and ordering up a couple Sake Bombs and gorging on Sushi. You know what? That's exactly what we did!

As we entered, we were immediately greeted by a vibrant young woman asking us if we wanted to sit at a table or at the bar? My girlfriend and I looked at each other and almost as immediately replied in unison, "At the bar please." We smiled at each other and laughed. I guess birds of a feather do flock together!

The woman guided us to the sushi bar which have the traditional black leather seats that are about waist high and make the experience of drinking Sake Bombs especially gratifying. She handed us the menus and we began to decide what to order. After a brief period, I noticed the Soft Shell Crab Roll offering. It is called "The Zig Zag." The plate includes a well-appointed 12-piece portion of Soft Shell Crab Sushi Roll and was mixed with Spicy Avocado Blend, Masago, and Onion. My girlfriend ordered the "Marilyn Monroll." A funny play on words? Most definitely. It included Scallop, Avocado, Crab mix, Panko shrimp, Sauce, Masago, and Onion. As we toasted to our love and drank(downed, really!) our Sake Bombs consisting of tasty and refreshing Japanese Sake and Japanese Sapporro Beer, I couldn't help but thinking Mikuni still offers the best ambiance and sushi that is offered in the Sacramento area. While this is the case, the prices listed on the menu itself are well in line to suit most people's pocketbook. Our entire dinner meal, with drinks, cost us less than fifty dollars total--including tip.

As a lover of sushi and Japanese cuisine in particular, its not hard for this writer to recommend a good sushi restaurant in the Sacramento area. What is hard at times, however, is recommending a great one. In my estimation, factors that makes a great restaurant are food, ambiance, price, service, and location. At times, the public gets varying amounts of one or the other, but usually not all at once. I believe Kaizen has filled all requirements with equal expertise. Location: The Fountains in Roseville. Ambiance: Upscale Chic. Price: Reasonable. Service: Excellent. Food and Drink: Yummy, yummy!
