The holidays can be a blur of shopping, school productions, family get-togethers, travel, church events, volunteering for charities, craft fairs, cookie baking, home decorating and parties with friends and coworkers. Time for outside events becomes a precious commodity, with so many things from which to choose. These Sacramento holiday happenings promise to be some of the best in town.

Date: Nov. 26 – Dec. 31, 2014Old Sacramento is always a great destination for holiday fun and shopping, but this Christmas event makes it even more exciting. On the balconies above K Street, visitors can see a live-action performance of "Twas the Night before Christmas" as told by Mark Twain. An enthralling history of Sacramento during the 1800s is also presented by Twain, with professional lighting and sound that brings it all to life. Santa makes a grand entrance at the end of the event, which runs every evening from Thanksgiving through New Year's Eve.

Date: Dec. 22-24, 2014The holiday ballet "The Nutcracker" is lovely in its traditional format, but the Guild Theater really lights up the night with this gorgeous and joyful update. The performance is an emotional experience created by talented local artists, using ballet, jazz, hip-hop, vocals and storytelling as their mediums. The event is put on by The Girls Self-Esteem Program (G-SEP), a local youth outreach and mentoring program. G-SEP Program Director Kandice Kelly says the production is performed by Sacramento youth up to age 18, including a precious two-year-old in a mouse costume who is "just dripping with sweet."

Date: Dec. 13, 2014If you have never been sure what to do with that, um, festive sweater that Aunt Bertha made for you, this is the perfect chance to actually enjoy wearing it. Grab some friends, toss on the ugliest holiday gear you can find and hit the road for this fun and silly 5k run. The festivities start at William Land Park, which will be filled with giant inflatables, fun photo booths and plenty of energetic holiday music. Instead of getting yet another race t-shirt, runners will receive a custom knit hat. Hot chocolate, hard cider and beer will be part of the post-race festivities, and prizes will be given for the worst sweater, best mustache and more. The event benefits Save The Children, a nonprofit child advocacy group.
