Rescued Dog In Bad Condition

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- The dog rescued by firefighters from a septic tank Friday evening is in worse condition than initially thought.

Homer, a 13-year-old Golden Retriever, can't move his hind legs following his fall into a 30-foot septic hole on Birch Ranch Drive late Thursday night.

Sacramento Metro Fire Department crews rescued the dog by lowering a firefighter into the hole and lifting the trapped, shivering dog out of the hole.

Veterinarians plan to perform an MRI on the dog to diagnose the problem. If Homer suffered a spinal injury, the owners will have to decide whether to euthanize the dog or try surgery.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet known.
