Two Found Dead Near Bike Trail

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Two dead bodies were found yards away from each other near a park bike trail, but the deaths are not connected, according to police.

The Sacramento Police Department said they found a transient dead from "obvious" trauma to the head underneath Highway 160 near the intersection of Northgate Boulevard and Del Paso Boulevard.

The close-knit community of homeless individuals living near the site of the murder said they were shocked to learn the victim, known as Redheaded Steve, was killed inside his sleeping bag.

"He didn't deserve to die, period," said friend Carol Carlile. "No matter what he did, he did not deserve to die like that."

While authorities investigated that death, another man was found dead a short distance away. There are no signs of foul play and police believe that man, also a transient, died of natural causes.

The identities of the deceased persons have not been released by police.

No arrests have been made.
