Tree Falls, Kills Camper Near Santa Rosa

SANTA ROSA, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities say a person camping at a wildlife preserve near Santa Rosa died when a tree toppled onto a tent during a rainstorm.

Fire officials tell the Press Democrat of Santa Rosa the occupant of the tent at the Safari West Wildlife Preserve was killed Tuesday night, as heavy winds and rain downed trees throughout the county. The victim has not been identified.

Rincon Valley Fire Department officials say their crews responded to the scene at 9:05 p.m., about 15 minutes after receiving an emergency call of someone injured by a downed tree.

The 400-acre wildlife preserve houses hundreds of exotic animals, including zebras and giraffes. It has 30 tents where customers can stay overnight.
