Police Working To Link Deadly Shooting, Major Crash

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- Investigators are working to prove that a deadly drive-by shooting in Del Paso Heights is connected to the dramatic high speed chase that ended in a pile-up crash at a busy North Natomas intersection Wednesday afternoon.

At least 14 bullet casings littered the ground after a man was shot while driving his car near the 900 block of Carmel Avenue on Wednesday afternoon.

The mortally wounded victim crashed into a home and later died after being transported to the hospital, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

Investigators said a dark Ford Explorer had pulled up to the victim's sedan and opened fire, and when police tried to pull over a similar vehicle a short time later, the driver sped away.

The high speed pursuit came to an abrupt end when the driver of the Explorer failed to navigate a turn at the corner of Del Paso Boulevard and Truxel Road at 60 miles per hour, skidding into oncoming traffic and smashing into at least six cars.

Three occupants of the car attempted to flee, but all were apprehended, police said.

Authorities said a gun was thrown from the suspect's vehicle during the pursuit, but investigators have recovered the weapon and will test for a ballistics match with the drive-by shooting.

The identities of the victim and suspects have not yet been released.
