Pilot Survives Small Plane Crash Into Bay

PALO ALTO, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities say a pilot escaped injury after his single-engine plane crashed into a section of mud flats along the edges of San Francisco Bay after taking off from Palo Alto Airport.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor says the Cessna 140 went down after its pilot reported a loss of engine power around 12:40 p.m. Saturday.

Gregor says the pilot was the only person on board and was not hurt.

He had no additional information on the incident, but a Fremont fire official says the plane went done about a half-mile south of the Dumbarton Bridge.

Acting battalion chief Steve Silva says crews from his department and from the Menlo Park Fire Department responded in boats, with Menlo Park crews taking the man from his downed plane.

The man, who has not been named, was treated at the scene and released.

The FAA and National Transportation Board will investigate.
