Loomis Man Poisoned; Wife Named As Suspect

Watch video

LOOMIS (CBS13) -- A Loomis man is in the hospital after he was allegedly poisoned, and now investigators suspect his wife may be to blame.

Robert Bettencourt became sick and was taken to the hospital after he drank a beer that may have contained concentrated buy spray, according to the Placer County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators went to Bettencourt's home and say they found the situation suspicious.

The victim's wife, Rachel Melody Bettencourt, 53, was arrested Monday and is now facing charges of willful poisoning and unlawful corporal injury to a spouse. She is being held on $100,000 bail.

We spoke to the couple's daughter, Chelsea, who is angry at her mother.

"I'm angry, I'm angry, so I just want her to sit there. That's where she deserves to be," said Chelsea.

Chelsea said she talked to her father in his hospital room and says he drank nearly the entire drink before he poured the rest it into the sink.

"He said it was milky and white and then he saw the bug stuff," said Chelsea.

She said her mother admitted to poisoning the beer shortly after her father drank it.

"He couldn't even stand up. He was just violently, violently ill," she said.

Chelsea says this is nothing new. Her mother has thrown bottles at her father, stabbed him, and even shot at him in the past.

The neighbors we talked to were shocked by the story.

"They seem to be close, very close," said a neighbor.

Chelsea is worried that Bob won't survive another night.
