Fire Destroys Two Modesto Homes Overnight

MODESTO (CBS13) – A massive fire ripped through two Modesto homes overnight before fire fighters were able to get the blaze under control.  It's the same street where another home burned just the night before.

Fire fighters were called to the corner of Kerr Avenue and Canal Street just before midnight to find flames engulfing the two vacant homes.

The blaze was so big, fire fighters had to use their aerial ladder to get the flames under control.  The aerial ladder is not usually used on residential fires.

It took fire fighters about 30 minutes to put the blaze out.

No injuries have been reported.

Just yesterday, fire fighters were called to the same street for a different fire at an abandoned home.  Fire fighters say that fire appeared to be arson.

"Since I've moved in the area I've seen more fires in one week than I have my whole life," said neighbor Sammy Robertson.

Neighbors are sick and tired of all the problems in this area including a woman who lives next door to one of the homes that caught fire this morning and feared her home would also go up in flames.

"It's scary. It's scary....They were spraying my roof," said Valerie, a homeowner in the area. "The only Silver lining I can see is I think I'm still able to sell my house and get the hell up out of here."

Fires apparently are not the only problems in the neighborhood.

"People collection copper are in and outta here.  Drug users are in and outta her," said Valerie.

As CBS13 crews were waiting to report on the fires, a man began combing through the debris at the two burned houses, eventually walking away with a wheelbarrow full of stolen copper wiring.
