Second Dead Bird Found Infected With West Nile

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Tests confirmed Thursday that a dead bird found in the Arden-Arcade area was carrying the West Nile Virus, authorities said.

The Sacramento-Yolo Mosquito and Vector Control District said the bird was the second American Crow confirmed to be carrying the disease in the region this year.

The West Nile Virus tends to spread to humans through mosquitoes that have bitten infected birds, and officials said they plan to step up efforts to trap mosquitoes and eradicate breeding sites.

Residents are urged to take precautions to avoid insect bites by wearing repellant and avoid spending much time outdoors around dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.

Some species of birds -- such as crows, jays and magpies -- are more susceptible to the disease. Residents who find dead birds that don't show any signs of physical trauma are asked to report the finding to the Department of Public Health at 877-968-2473.
