Sacramento Issues Water Alert For Holiday

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – City officials are asking residents to conserve drinking water over the Fourth of July weekend over concerns that hot weather could put a strain on supplies.

A wet winter and recent storms have ensured that local reservoirs and rivers are running high, but increased demand during a heatwave can put Sacramento's treated water supply under a heavy load.

There isn't a danger of running out of water, but utilities officials say voluntary conservation of non-essential water use keeps distribution efficient. Conservation also makes sure water pressure is consistent for fire emergencies.

Simple changes, such as watering plants and lawns before 10:00 a.m. and after 7:00 p.m., can ease the strain during stretches of 100-plus degree temperatures, authorities said.

Spare the Water alerts are issued automatically when forecasts show at least three consecutive days of triple digit heat.
