Students Rally In Support Of Teacher Accused Of Child Molestation

YUBA CITY, Calif. (CBS13) – A popular high school math teacher in Yuba City accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a former student is getting a strong show of support from his students.

Early Monday morning, dozens of current and former students of Manual Barajas rallied outside River Valley High this morning handing out fliers proclaiming his innocence.

Students call him Mr. B and say he is one of the most popular teachers at the Yuba City school.

"He's not your average math teacher who just says do this, do that, he actually wants you to succeed like he did, by working in the fields to get his degree which is now threatened by this," said former student Jose Patino.

Supporters simply don't believe the picture investigators paint of Manuel Barajas.

The popular 30-year-old teacher seen here in his mug shot faces child molestation charges.

Last week, the Yuba City School District told police Barajas may have had an inappropriate relationship with a former female student under the age of 18.  An incident allegedly happened on campus before the first day of school.

Kelly Gonzales is a senior at River Valley High.  She was attended this morning's rally in support of Barajas.

"I was absolutely astonished.  I couldn't believe that MR. Barajas could be accused of something like this, " said Gonzales.

There is also a Facebook page in support of Barajas.  It was started just a few days ago and already 1,000 people have joined.

Barajas was arrested and released because his bail is less than $5,000.

The 30-year-old's court date has not yet been set, as investigators work to build their case.
