UC Berkeley Hit By Outbreak Of Mumps

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) -- State public health officials are investigating an outbreak of mumps at the University of California, Berkeley.

Officials have confirmed seven cases of the illness so far and suspect 13 additional cases. The City of Berkeley, in contrast, has had just six cases since 1990.

UC Berkeley's Tang Health Center is advising students to check their health records to insure they have received two doses of the MMR vaccine for measles, mumps and rubella.

Even then, the health center says students should get an additional dose.

Mumps is a contagious virus spread by saliva or mucus. It is typically association with young kids.

Symptoms include fever, headache and swollen glands. I
