UPDATE: Search Winds Down In Nevada County

NEVADA COUNTY (CBS13) -- A man who could be the person sheriff's deputies and volunteers were searching for in Nevada County checked himself into the hospital Thursday afternoon.

Deputies from the Nevada County Sheriff's Office and volunteers were searching the Deer Creek area around Champion Mine Road and the Deer Creek Tribute Trail after a report of hearing someone cry for help in the area, according to Lt. Shannon Moon.

The man apparently was able to get out of the woods himself and headed to the emergency room. There were reports that a child might have been with the man, but that was not confirmed.

A CHP helicopter was deployed Wednesday night and also was used Thursday, she said.

A caller reported hearing the calls for help around 7 p.m. Wednesday. Nevada City police officers responded to the area and also heard cries for help, Moon said. The sheriff's office took over the search later Wednesday night.

Moon said the canyon's terrain makes it difficult to pinpoint a location. She also said the sheriff's office hadn't received any missing persons reports.
