Surfer Bitten By Shark Released From The Hospital

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A man who was bitten in the neck by a shark while surfing off a California beach is out of the hospital.

Twenty-seven-year-old Eric Tarantino walked out of the San Jose hospital Monday afternoon with bandages on his neck, right arm and both hands.

Tarantino was surfing with friends at Marina State Beach in Monterey County on Saturday when a 9-foot shark attacked. The animal also left teeth marks on his red surfboard.

After his friends helped him, authorities airlifted him to Regional Medical Center.

Hospital spokeswoman Bev Mikalonis says the neck bite narrowly missed Tarantino's jugular vein and carotid artery.

Officials are warning people at Marina State Beach to stay out of the water for the next week because of the shark danger.
