Ripon High School Custodian Arrested For Annoying A Minor

RIPON (CBS13) – A high school custodian has been arrested for allegedly annoying and touching a student, according to the Ripon Police Department.

Ripon Police arrested 33-year-old Carlos Gutierrez, a custodian at Ripon High School, on Friday shortly after the alleged incident.

"It's just shocking coming from a school where it's a small town and the janitor, it's something big for us, but something unexpected," student Selena Jimenez told CBS13 on Monday.

Police say the custodian was working in the high school gym when the alleged incident happened. The student was not physically harmed.

When school officials found out about the alleged incident, they immediately contacted the school resource officer on campus. They notified parents a few hours later.

"I was shocked," Superintendent Louise Johnson said. "We care very deeply about the student and the students safety so it was important to us for us to do what ever it takes to make sure our students are safe at school."

Police say Gutierrez voluntarily went to the police department for questioning where he was then taken into custody.

Gutierrez was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on misdemeanor charges of battery and annoying a minor.

Gutierrez has only been on the job since the beginning of the school year but made a positive impression on some of the students.

"If you walk by him, he'll smile at you or wave," Gabby Huerra said.

"He was a really nice guy," Shae Biggs said."I was suprised when I heard what happened."
