Police: Man Hides In Bar After Closing, Helps Himself To Booze

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Apparently closing time wasn't quitting time for one guy at an Old Sacramento bar.

Calvin Hubbard, 34, snuck into the women's bathroom at the Coconut Grove Sports Bar & Grill at 106 J Street overnight Wednesday, then proceeded to drink heavily from the bar after everyone left, according to Sacramento police.

Hubbard says he was simply looking for a place to sleep, and found one under a table in the restaurant. "I'm homeless," he said in a jailhouse interview with CBS13 on Thursday afternoon. "I feel like I shouldn't have been arrested and I'd like to be out of jail."

The bar's owner, Mateo Corpuz, tells CBS13 that Hubbard had expensive taste, selecting from the priciest bottles in the establishment, including a 12-year-old bottle of unopened Scotch, Crown Royal, Patron and Hennessy. Hubbard also downed some beers, Sgt. Andrew Pettit said. In all, the bar total was about $700, Corpuz said.

"Wow. Wow. I didn't know I drank that much," Hubbard said. "Yeah, a little bit I did (feel sick in the morning)."

Hubbard also helped himself to some ice cream from the kitchen. "It was vanilla," he said.

When Hubbard woke up Thursday morning, he stumbled around and set off the motion detector. Corpuz got a call from his alarm company at 7:30 a.m. and called police. Officers arrived, found Hubbard asleep on a couch and arrested him for burglary. There was no damage to the bar, Corpuz said.

Corpuz treated the incident with a sense of humor, saying at least it happened during the holidays. He did say he was relieved there was no damage done to the bar.

Hubbard was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on $10,000 bail. Now he's wondering if Corpuz can help him get out.

"I'd like to know if you can please forgive me for disrespecting your bar," he said. "I'm wondering if you can help me out and get me out of jail."
