Pathologist: Dalene Carlson Shot In Back Of Head, Twice In Stomach

STOCKTON (CBS13) - Day one of what's expected to be a three-day preliminary hearing in a high-profile murder case yielded more information about how a young Stockton woman died.

A forensic pathologist testified that not only was Dalene Carlson shot in the back of the head execution style, he says she was shot twice in her midsection. Another two bullets were found in the dirt underneath her remains.

He says she was shot with small-caliber bullets.

Murder suspect Jason Gilley's uncle took the stand discussing a .22 caliber gun Gilley borrowed for target shooting, but it's not clear if the gun was returned before Dalene vanished after leaving Finnegan's bar in Stockton on Aug. 6.

He testified he thought it was returned a couple days before her disappearance because it was later brought on a family camping trip.

That gun was turned over to detectives shortly after Dalene's body was found in an Escalon cornfield two months after her disappearance.

Dalene's former boyfriend Jacob Evangelisti also testified that Dalene was heading to his house with Gilley the night she disappeared. He said he spoke to her on the phone almost a dozen times, but she never showed up.

From the beginning officers have said inconsistencies in Gilley's statements led to his arrest.

A detective took the stand saying Gilley told him he went home that night to tend to a sick child.

We expect to hear more about statements made when the hearing continues. Additional law enforcement witnesses are expected to testify Tuesday before a judge decides if there's enough evidence to send this case to trial.
