UPDATE: Armed Man Holed Up In Fair Oaks Residence Found Dead; Name Released

FAIR OAKS (CBS13) - A man who held up inside a Fair Oaks residence and was later found dead after being shot by a deputy Thursday afternoon has been identified.

The Sacramento County Coroner on Friday identified the man as 47-year-old Michael Craig Berger.

The situation at the residence in the 4800 block of Vir Mar Street started at about noon when deputies went to serve an arrest warrant on Berger, who was wanted for making terrorist threats, according to Deputy Jason Ramos.

He said they entered the home but then saw that Berger was in a bedroom holding a handgun and pointing it in their direction, so they backed out and called in SWAT and negotiators.

During conversations with negotiators, Berger reportedly told them he would not surrender and would kill deputies if they tried to enter the home, Ramos said.

Berger briefly came out of the home's garage at about 4 p.m. carrying a long-barreled gun and a deputy fired a single shot at him. He then went back inside and it was unclear if he had been hit by the deputy.

A few hours later, SWAT sent in a robot and found Berger dead. He was determined to have sustained a gunshot wound to his upper body. Several firearms and numerous rounds of ammunition were found near Berger.

The deputy who shot Berger, a 16-year veteran, was placed on paid administrative leave per department policy while the shooting is investigated.
