Valley's Late Bloomer McGee Named Athlete Of Week

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - You wouldn't know it by watching, but Dean McGee only started playing football his freshman year at Valley High School.

Now this junior is playing varsity, pulling double duty as a linebacker and wide receiver.

"I played flag, but this is my first time playing contact," he said.

He says he enjoyed watching football as a child - LaDainian Tomlison and Randy Moss were two of his favorites - and he's always been fascinated with the sport.

"Playing defense, the thrill of hitting someone just before the tackle, catching the ball right in the middle of a game, just everything about it," he said.

When it comes to school work McGee says "I'm not a really good school person, but I like science."

Well, his stats show otherwise. This football star maintains a 4.3 GPA

"It's hard juggling with football," he said. "This year I have four AP classes. It's pretty hard."

That's right, he said four, including chemistry and calculus.

"This is the year all colleges look at so I'm trying to do my best," he said.

Unfortunately for McGee, he'll have more time for studies after breaking his arm against Monterey Trail last week.
