Shuttle Endeavour Makes Tour Over California

LOS ANGELES (AP/CBS13) — Space shuttle Endeavour embarked on its tour of California on Friday morning, flying over Sacramento before heading to the Bay Area.

Riding piggyback atop a modified 747 jumbo jet, the shuttle departed Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert and made its way over the Central Valley into Sacramento, and then over to the Bay Area. The pair overnighted at the base 100 miles north of Los Angeles after a cross-country flight.

Endeavour circled the high desert before flying north to Sacramento, where it made a low pass over the state Capitol at about 9:45 a.m. before looping back again. Then it headed to the San Francisco Bay Area.

It was in the East Bay by 10:15, then flew over the Golden Gate Bridge and over Marin County.

From the Bay Area it was headed back to Southern California, where it will eventually land at the Los Angeles International Airport after circling around several spots in Southern California. The flyovers will last nearly five hours.

After it lands, Endeavour will be housed at the United Airlines hanger until it is driven through the streets of South Los Angeles to the California Science Center in Exposition Park on Oct. 12.
