UPDATED: Modesto Husband Allegedly Shot By Wife In Front Of Kids Dies

MODESTO (CBS13) - A mother has been taken into custody after allegedly shooting her husband in front of their five children.

"They were screaming for their dad," one neighbor said.

The bloodcurdling screams from young kids are what people who live on the 400 block of Boone Way near Elm Avenue say they heard shortly after 6 p.m.

"They were crying and yelling," another neighbor said. "My daddy, my daddy."

Just after 6 p.m., Modesto police responded to the residence where the couple was reportedly arguing when the incident occurred.

"At this point we believe we have the [person] responsible in custody," said Sgt. Steven Stanfield, Modesto Police Department.

Police say when they arrived, a woman, described to be in her 20s or 30s, and five children, ranging from ages 4 to 11, exited the home.

"All the children and the female came out of the house," said Stanfield. "She said there was a deceased male inside the home."

However, police say a man in his 50s, suffering from a single gunshot wound, was still alive when they arrived. He would later die at a nearby hospital.

Neighbors say it was an unfamiliar scene that would unfold outside the home.

One neighbor described the mother as "just standing there, like nothing happened."

"It's heartbreaking. It kind of hurts, they were good people," one neighbor said. "You don't want to see that with kids."

The woman is in custody, and police say she's being cooperative.

Police say they have not made any arrests, but continue to question the suspect, as well as those kids.
