SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A Sacramento man accused of killing his son with a hatchet in February was in court on Thursday.
Phillip Hernandez stood silent as his attorney spoke to the judge.
Police say a relative at the family’s home on Atrisco Circle in Natomas called 9-1-1 on January 26 just before midnight, saying the boy had died.
Emergency crews and police arrived at Phillip’s Sacramento home and found Phillip’s son, Matthew Hernandez, dead from blunt force trauma to the head. Police were told that Phillip, 36, got a hatchet from the backyard of the home and used it to smash through a glass sliding door. He then attacked Matthew as the boy slept on the couch.
Hernandez was found 15 minutes later walking in the area and was arrested without incident.
Both sides agreed to continue the hearing on April 12.
