Stockton Market Provides Healthy Eating Options For Families

For Tanisha Tillis, driving to the nearest grocery store to pick up fresh fruit and vegetables isn't an option.

"We don't have a car to get to the big stores."

That's why she was thrilled when M & M Market at 1408 East 8th Street in south Stockton started to offer a small selection of healthy choices.

"A lot of kids do like fruits. It's not available to them, so they only go for the candy," Mills said.

The store's owners say local public health advocates made it easy to add the fresh section by providing them with a vendor list and signs to let shoppers know fresh food has arrived. Since the recent conversion, overall sales have soared about 30 percent.

"We get more business. A lot of people want fresh fruit—one stop and you buy everything," said store owner Tony Almager.

Shoppers hope other corner stores follow suit and offer fresh food.
