Child Eludes Abduction By Escaping From Moving Car's Trunk

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — A 7-year-old girl escaped her abductor after being taken while walking with her mom on Saturday in what Sacramento County Sheriff's Deputies are calling possibly the second abduction involving the same man.

The young girl was walking with her mother and two other children around 1 p.m. on Saturday along 47th Avenue when the man pulled to to them, said sheriff's department spokesman Sgt. Jason Ramos.

"Swooped up in a matter of seconds, grabbed her and was off down the road with the victim in the trunk," Ramos said.

Her mother watched in horror as the man sped away with her child in his trunk, but Ramos said the girl fought to get out.

"She was just really brave," he said. "She jumped out as the car was still going."

Less than a mile down the road, Christina Covey says she and her family were standing in the front yard when the little girl ran toward them yelling for help as the man in the car took off.

"He kept trying to stop to get the trunk to go back down, but when he saw my husband and me run out, he freaked out," she said. He was going to get out and get her, but he freaked out and kept going."

She only suffered bumps, bruises and some road rash.

"The little girl happened just to fall in front of me. I'm so happy that she did and we were out here," Covey said.

The sheriff's department says the circumstances of the case are disturbing.

"A really brazen attack on his part, to do this in the middle of the day, in the presence of other people, we think we're dealing with a very dangerous individual."

The suspect is described as being between the ages of 25 and 35 with light-brown skin, standing between 5-feet-10-inches to 6-feet tall, and weighing between 170 and 190 pounds. He has black, shoulder-length hair, and was either worn in braids or dreadlocks.

The man was last seen wearing a black shirt with a white, printed design on the front. The suspect's vehicle is described as a dark green or blue 4-door sedan with tinted windows.

Anyone with information of the suspect's identity is asked to contact the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department at (916) 874-5115. Tip information may also be left anonymously at the department website, by texting to 274637 (CRIMES) and entering the keyword SSD, or by calling (916) 874-TIPS (8477).
