North Highlands 10-Year-Old's Shooting May Be Gang-Related

NORTH HIGHLANDS (CBS13) — Investigators say two gunmen knew exactly what they were doing when they fired gunshots into a home full of family members, killing a 10-year-old girl.

They say two men walked up to the home on Saturday night and fired several shots through the window and door, killing Elvira Campos while she was sitting in her living room.

"She was viewable through the window, and based on the proximity of the shooter, no doubt they knew they were shooting a child," said Sacramento County Sheriff's Detective Jeff Wallace.

Elvira's mother and father were also shot, but are expected to survive.

Investigators say Elvira's 20-year-old brother, who was not home at the time, may have gang ties and may have been the intended target.

Family members were at the home today, still cleaning up after the Saturday night shooting spree. Friends and even strangers stopped by to say a prayer for the family.

Patricia Roman remembers her 10-year-old aunt as a happy child.

"She would always be the happiest, she was always the sunshine of the family," she said. "We really really need someone to take action for her death."

Larry Ellis says the entire neighborhood is not only on edge, but angry at the circumstances of the crime.

"If it were my family, you better pray to God to come and snatch you up," he said.

Grief counselors were also available today at Elvira's school, Village Elementary today.

Meanwhile detectives don't have much information about any possible suspects. It's also not clear if other recent shootings in the area are related, leaving residents worried.

Roman has advice for the girl's killer:

"If you were brave enough to go ahead and kill a little girl that had nothing to do with this, you should have enough courage to come up to the police and claim that you have done this."
