Roseville Police Cry Foul Over Emergency Pension Meeting

ROSEVILLE (CBS13) — Roseville Police are upset about a decision by the city council to abruptly move contract negotiation talks up by almost a week to Thursday.

The meeting was originally supposed to happen on June 5, but the city called for a special emergency meeting Thursday at 11 a.m. and didn't notify the police union.

"The city doesn't want to work on a solution anymore," said Roseville Police Officers Association President Jerry Wernli.

With less than 24 hours remaining, members of the union rushed to get word out about the late-morning meeting.

The union says the city's decision is a calculated step to leave officers scrambling and looking for supporters.

"It's going to be impossible to get that in such a short amount of time and at such a weird hour," Wernli said.

City councilmembers said they were looking forward to moving forward with negotiations and defended their actions.

The city spokesperson released a statement that read in part: "Tomorrow's meeting was scheduled as a matter of urgency. All meetings have been noticed in compliance with the Brown Act."

While the city defends the letter of their actions, the police union questions the spirit of them.

"It is legally right? Yes. Is it ethically right? No," Wernli said.
