Fast-Moving Calaveras County Fire Burns Homes, Sends Residents Fleeing

CALAVERAS COUNTY (CBS13) — A fast-moving grass fire barely gave three people, including a woman in a wheelchair, time to escape their homes.

Holding back tears, Diane Wagner says she got a call this afternoon that her Rancho Calaveras home was on fire.

"It's unbelievable," she said. "It's like one day you are here, and then—overwhelming."

Her heart sank because inside that home was her handicapped sister who can barely walk—she's forced to get around in a wheelchair.

"Luckily she got out," Diane said. "She got the animals out and stuff. We're blessed, because we had people to help."

The wind-blown brush fire started and quickly jogged down a hill and up another to reach the homes. It moved so fast, fire crews evacuated a handful of homes nearby.

Dicki Audrey's home also burned, but she says the things inside are just that—things.

"I couldn't care less about the house," she said. "It's my sister, my family."
