Sacramento Police Partner With Neighborhood App To Better Inform Residents

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - The Sacramento Police Department is going high tech, introducing a new hyper-local iPhone app aimed at keeping residents safe and informed.

"(The app) is making Sacramento the safest big city in California," said Sacramento police Chief Sam Somers.

Nextdoor.com was designed as a virtual Neighborhood Watch program.

"It's been an invaluable service," user Isac Gonzales said.

Gonzales, who lives in Tahoe Park, is brimming with confidence after signing up.

"It's been just a wonderful tool to get out information in a lightning fast way," he said.

The Sacramento Police Department has partnered with Nextdoor.com to help the community communicate in case of a crime, to share information about neighborhoods, or about city events.

"Almost 30 percent of Americans know only a few of their neighbors, and almost 30 percent of Americans don't know a single neighbor by name. So that's 60 percent of Americans, over half, that don't have strong connections to their neighbors," said Nextdoor.com CEO Nirav Tolia.

That's something Somers wants changed.

"It's that connection with the community that we have and also the communication that they have amongst each other that helps make Sacramento safe," he said.

A hundred Sacramento neighborhoods are already using the iPhone app.
