Broken Pipe Floods Stockton Street, Leaves Some Without Water

STOCKTON (CBS13) - A broken water main in Stockton dumped hundreds of gallons of water onto the street, which is still shutdown.

The water main broke Friday afternoon on Jackson and Lincoln Streets.

Fortunately, residents' water was turned back on in the evening, but crews were still working to repair the road after water starting gushing through several holes in the pavement.

"I was parked right here and the road started coming up, and I was going 'what the heck is going on down there?' And then, all of a sudden the water came through," said one witness.

It was a muddy mess and inconvenience.

"When it came up, it was a gusher. It was probably 10-15 feet in the air at first, and then it started coming up all over the road," the man said.

He quickly jumped into action.

"I had barricades in the back of my truck from work and put those out there so we keep people back. Cause if that road would collapse underneath it, somebody is driving over it, you would have a heck of a problem," he said.

The California Water Service Company says about 20 homes were without water for several hours.

So residents like Alma Mendoza and her kids had to make due.

"We can't even wash our hands," she said.

To get to the problem, crews had to dig down several feet to repair the pipe. Now it's just a matter of restoring the road.

"You've got to go with the flow," resident Carlos Barrera said.

There were no reported injuries. Cal Water expects the road to be back open around midnight.
