Hundreds Of Hens Up For Adoption After Farmer Spares Them From Euthanization

FRENCH CAMP (CBS13) — Hundreds of hens that are past their prime and no longer laying eggs have been spared for now as an animal sanctuary tries to find them homes.

Instead of being euthanized, almost 600 rescued hens are getting a second chance as pets.

That's because a local egg farmer had a change of heart and called Harvest Home Animal Sanctuary.

"This particular farm has been in business for quite awhile, and with this particular flock decided to make a compassionate gesture for these birds," said Christene Morrisey with the animal sanctuary.

The small rescue organization jumped into action to help save the birds. They're working to adopt them out to chicken-friendly homes.

"Chickens are very active and friendly animals that are very similar in many ways to dogs and cats that are very human-oriented and make for wonderful companion animals."

The hens spent the last two years living six-deep in a cramped cage.

Putting the hens up for adoption means they birds can roam free for the remaining 10-plus years of their lives.

The group is working with other agencies statewide. So far, about half have been adopted or transferred to other rescue groups.

"We've been working around the clock to transport hens safely to their organization where they will in turn do the same."

The hens will lay a few eggs here and there.
