Man Convicted In Riverbank Mini-Mart Slaying

MODESTO, Calif. (AP) — One man has been found guilty and another acquitted in the fatal shooting of a man outside a Riverbank convenience store three years ago.

The Modesto Bee reports a jury found 18-year-old Turlock Diaz guilty of first-degree murder and attempted carjacking in the shooting death of Chaz Bettencourt. Jah-Kari Phyall, also 18, was acquitted of all charges. Diaz faces up to 50 years to life in prison.

Diaz was 14 and Phyall was 15 when the shooting occurred in August 2010. Authorities say Bettencourt had gone to the store with a friend. Bettencourt was shot when his friend went inside to call 911 after three people demanded a car.

A jury is still deliberating on a third defendant, Daniel Pantoja, who also is charged with murder and attempted carjacking.
