High-Speed Rail Authority Promises 3 Percent Of Jobs To Disabled Veterans

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - California's High-Speed Rail Authority wants to get disabled veterans back to work.

The authority and California's Department of Veteran Affairs signed a contract Thursday at Sacramento City Hall, promising to award 3 percent of the multi-billion dollar project to small businesses owned by disabled veterans.

"This is for real. This is California government working at its best. To be part of this from the ground floor, to ensure disabled veterans are allowed to get contracts in this high-speed rail project, this is a great opportunity for us," said California Department of Veteran Affairs Secretary Peter Gravett.

Officials say this will put hundreds of disabled veterans from various backgrounds back to work in the state.

Every year, about 30,000 to 40,000 veterans return home to California from the service.
