Family, Friends Angered Streetlight Wasn't Fixed Before Teen Was Killed By Car
SOUTH SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — Friends and family of a teenager who was struck and killed while crossing the street gathered to remember her.
Alfredo Hernandez stood just feet away, watching helplessly as a car barreled into his best friend, 17-year-old Ausha Holly.
"I screamed out her name, saying, 'Ausha, Ausha, are you OK? Are you OK?' But she didn't reply back. I ran over there, saw her bleeding," he said.
They were on their way home from a nearby McDonald's when she crossed Mack Road just before 8 p.m. on Wednesday.
A day later, her friends and family gathered near the accident scene, overwhelmed with sadness.
"That was my only child," said Ausha's mother Kimberly Winzer. "She was a good person."
Many remembering Ausha were filled with anger and disappointment at the city for a broken streetlight right across from where Ausha died.
That light, they say, could have made a difference on Wednesday, but with the death of a loved one, it's too little too late.
"If these lights were fixed yesterday, my best friend would still be with me right now," said Hernandez.
