Skiers Happy As Sierra Storm Drops 3 Feet Of Snow

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A storm dropped up to 3 feet of snow in the Sierra Nevada and brought smiles to the faces of skiers and snowboarders.

Most major Sierra ski resorts have opened for the season, but need more snow to swing into full operation.

Around Lake Tahoe, Kirkwood reports the storm dumped 2 to 3 feet of snow over a 24-hour period ending Saturday morning. Heavenly reports 24 inches to 30 inches of new snow and Squaw Valley 20 inches.

All Sierra resorts report they're offering limited operations until they get more snow.

Kirkwood spokesman Kevin Cooper says his resort plans to open more terrain and lifts on Sunday, and there are "some promising indications" the Sierra is now in a winter weather pattern.

The storm also slowed traffic on mountain highways.
