Woman Finds Engagement Ring Among Rubble In Aftermath Of Cordelia Fire
SOLANO COUNTY (CBS13) – She was just four months away from marrying her fiancé when the fire destroyed their home.
"It feels so unreal ... like a bad dream," Heather Thornton said.
But Thornton's nightmare is realty. Her home was the only one burned to the ground in a fire that ripped through a Cordelia neighborhood Friday night.
On Saturday, Thornton and her family stopped by the property where the woman's home once stood.
"You come here and you can see it," Thornton said. "But it's hard to really believe that's all we've got."
The home was reduced to a pile of ruble. But in that pile, they found something special.
"My engagement ring! How crazy is that!" Thornton said.
Thornton said she had taken off the ring because she had bent it a few days ago. She couldn't be happier to have it back on her hand, where the ring belongs.
"We're thankful, we're so thankful!" Thornton said.
Items that couldn't be saved were the wedding invitations and centerpieces. The one thing she did remember was her wedding dress. That is safe.
"There was one point where I thought, 'No it's okay.' But then I'm like, 'No wait, that thing was expensive and special.'"
The wedding is set for Oct. 11.
The community's has set up a GoFundMe page for the family. Meanwhile, investigators are still trying to find the cause of the fire that burned five acres, destroyed Heather's home and several outbuildings.
