King Fire: Placer County Health Officials Warn Smoky Conditions Bad For Elderly, Children

PLACER COUNTY (CBS13) — Placer County public health officials are warning hazardous conditions from the King Fire's smoke could become dangerous.

For people like Mary Barringer, it's hard to find a safe place to hide from the smoke.

"Very tough with those of us with a touch of asthma and hay fever. It's bad," she said.

Dr. Robert Oldham, Placer County's public health officer, says it's now too dangerous for the elderly, children and those with respiratory problems to be in the smoke.

He says if you can see or smell smoke, consider modifying your outdoor activities.

He recommends staying inside with the windows and doors closed, running the air conditioner on the recirculation setting, limiting outdoor exertion and physical activity, and reducing unnecessary driving.

But some people like Carl Ries say they have no other choice but to be in it.

"You got to work. If you don't, you have the money to go eat," he said.

Sensitive groups should be aware of symptoms including coughing, a scratchy throat and difficulty breathing.
