Sacramento Republic FC Wins USL Pro Championship Game 2-0

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – Sacramento Republic FC capped off their already memorable inaugural season by winning the USL Pro Championship game on their home turf Saturday night.

In front of a sold-out and raucous crowd at Bonney Field, Republic FC jumped ahead of the Harrisburg City Islanders in the 36th minute with a goal from midfielder Octavio Guzman.

Forward Thomas Stewart for Republic FC then scored a goal in stoppage time, sealing the game for Sacramento.

As the team celebrated their win, the crowd at Bonney Field began chanting "MLS! MLS!" Sacramento is just a week removed from hosting executives from Major League Soccer, who are eyeing the city as the next home for an expansion team.

Tim Holt, the current USL Pro president, says the MLS choice is an easy one.

"If the MLS called you and asked whether the republic should be in the MLS, what would you say? I'd say a resounding yes. We think this is going to be one of the top markets in America for years to come," Holt said.

The game was arguably the hottest ticket in town, with tickets selling for more than quadruple their face value the night leading up to the match.
