3 Arrested In Vacaville For Stabbing, Robbing Homeless Man

VACAVILLE (CBS13) – A failed robbery of a jogger apparently helped Vacaville Police catch three young men suspected of stabbing and robbing a homeless man Saturday morning.

The first incident happened near the 76 Gas station near Nut Tree Road and Summerfield Drive. Vacaville Police say that a little after 5 a.m. officers were called to the scene due to a reported stabbing.

At the scene, officers found that a homeless man who had been sleeping in the area had been attacked.

According to police, three young men first threw a beer bottle at the homeless man to wake him up. The homeless man then walked over near the gas station, only to have the three other men come back and surround him.

The homeless man then tried to run away, only to be chased by the three young men. Soon, the three other men were able to once again surround the homeless man. Police say that this is when the three attacked, stabbing the homeless man two times. The three then ran away after taking the man's cash.

The homeless man was later taken to the hospital but is expected to be OK.

Later, a little after 6:30 a.m., another man called police to report that he had been running near Nut Tree and Summerfield – the same area as the attack – when some men in a car pulled up and tried to rob him. The jogger believed the man was reaching for a weapon, so he ran away.

With a good description of the car from the second victim, an officer spotted the suspects' car near Nut Tree and Elmira Roads. The officer then car ran the plates and was told that the car was reported stolen yesterday. The officer then tried to pull the car over, only for the driver to hit the gas and try to get away.

However, the chase ended after the driver of the suspect car crashed into a tree in front of an apartment complex along the 100 block of Summerfield Drive. Police say the driver, 20-year-old Daniel Ortiz, tried to get out and run, but he was soon caught.

Two others were arrested inside the car: 19-year-old Angel Alvarado and an unidentified 17-year-old.

Police say that they believe the three are the same suspects who attacked and robbed the homeless man earlier that morning.

All three suspects were arrested on charges of robbery, assault with a deadly weapon and conspiracy, among other charges.
