West Sacramento Silo Demolition Raises Dust Concerns
WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — As silos that have been a part of the West Sacramento landscape come down, some neighbors are concerned about health issues the dust and debris may be creating.
The West Sacramento Pioneer Bluff area is slowly being transformed into a possible retail and residential waterfront mecca.
Six silos are being demolished, fulfilling the vision of city and county leaders, but some of that demolition appears to be landing blocks away.
Alex Mehmood of Sacramento Auto Sales says the work is leaving a thin film of concrete dust on his cars, turning off potential customers.
"When you wash it that's what it does it makes it even worse," he said. "We've had a few customers come in and say, 'What happened why are your cars so dirty?' I say there's demolition going on behind us."
CBS13 cameras found lots of what appears to be concrete dust not only on cars, but on nearby buildings and plants.
Paul Hensleigh, a deputy pollution control officer at the Yolo-Solano Air Quality Management District, says there's no reason to be alarmed.
"We've received dust complaints from neighbors," he said.
He says his staff inspects the demolition project on a continuous basis and found no air quality violations.
"We have received three complaints and we've investigated each one," he said. "We're not aware of any associated health risks with this project."
Mehmood says his customers won't be breathing easy until the demolition is done and his cars aren't covered in dust.
"We tried to wash them multiple times. We've used soap, we've used pressure washer, hot water it does not seem to come off," he said.
The project is expected to wrap up in a few weeks.
