Call Kurtis: I Was Charged For Running Toll in Truck That Doesn't Run

ELK GROVE (CBS 13) An Elk Grove viewer wants to know how he could get a toll violation in Southern California. Mike Koselar says he can't even drive his 1971 Chevy truck which has been parked on his property for two years.

"There's no fuel tank there's nothing to it," he said.

So why did he get a toll violation for $63.40 in Southern California on August 2nd at 11:28 am..

Kolesar says, "It's very ridiculous. It's a joke."

Kolesar says he challenged the fine with The Toll Roads by mail and online but heard nothing. They won't even answer his calls.

When a second bill arrived, Kolesar said his new bill was for $105.90 for not paying in time and if he doesn't pay, he faces a vehicle registration lien.

Kolesar said, "My wife is always saying, 'If you can't fix it, call Kurtis.'"

We've learned The Toll Roads is 51-miles of roads in Orange County built with investor dollars. I turned to the Toll Roads Lisa Telles.

Kurtis: "He can't even drive this truck? So how did he get this violation?"

Telles: "Because somebody did drive on the road that had a very similar license plate."

She says 260-thousand plates are read each day and somehow, an "i" was confused with a "t".. in Mike's personalized plate that reads "HUNTING".

Kurtis: "Why couldn't he get this fixed?"

Telles: "It should've been taken care of. It wasn't and we apologize."

They admit, Mike fell through the cracks. But no longer. After we got involved, his name is cleared. He and his son now plan to focus on restoring his truck.

The Toll Roads say it's now red flagged Mike's plate so if it pops up again, they'll double check before sending out a ticket.

Much like the Golden Gate Bridge, The Toll Roads recently went cashless which has increased the work load in processing tolls.
They plan to add staff so more people don't fall through the cracks.
