California's Only Wolverine Spotted In Tahoe National Forest

TAHOE NATIONAL FOREST (CBS13) – Long thought extinct in California, researchers say they have spotted a wolverine in the Tahoe National Forest.

According to photos posted on California Department of Fish and Wildlife Facebook page Thursday, a remote camera captured numerous photos of the little creature. The photos look to have been taken on three separate days late last year.

Officials say the wolverine was first spotted in California back in 2008.

"Since then, the elusive animal has remained in California and granted a few rare appearances," CDF&W wrote in the post.

Researchers have been able to take genetic material to test and see if it is indeed the same wolverine.

The wolverine is believed to have come from a population in the Sawtooth Range of the Rocky Mountains in Idaho.
